Cheap Hotels on the Road

(Short Excerpts From the Book)

Book Online if You Know Where to Stop

  • If you know where a stopping point is, make arrangements ahead by looking online. Use the tips in the hotel chapter in order to assure the best price and the best location.
  • Sometimes it is better to have peace of mind knowing that you have a place to lay your head instead of saving a couple of bucks.

Use Coupon/Travel Books Available at Convenience Stores, Gas Stations, and Rest Stops

  • There are many different forms of coupon books that hotels subscribe to.
  • These can be found almost anywhere during your trip. Once you enter a new state, look for a new coupon book. In the past, we have been able to stay at nice 3-4 star hotels for $30 a night.
  • The catch with the coupon books are that most of the coupons are only for one night and do not qualify for reservations. Be sure to read the fine print as a lot of coupons are voided for weekend and holiday stays.

Use Your Cell Phone to Make Reservations on the Road

  • If you use a coupon book, start calling ahead to make sure there is availability and in order to clear up any doubts about their facilities.
  • If you aren’t sure about which town you might stop in, but have a list of places that you want to stay in, call on the road when it might be clear where you will need to stop.
  • Call other hotels in the area and see if they would honor a better coupon from another hotel. Doing this can possibly give you upgrades like an indoor pool, continental breakfast, or better location to the highway. It never hurts to ask.
  • Call for additional directions if the directions you have aren’t very clear.
  • Using a cell phone can help save time and money by not having to drive to hotel after hotel looking for an opening.

Look for the “Free Breakfast”

  • It is always worth it to get that free meal before hitting the road again.
  • Before checking in, ask what is included in the breakfast. The term “Continental Breakfast” has taken on several different meanings over the years. The meal could be as simple as a package of powdered donuts and a carton of milk or as lavish as waffles, toast, cereal, juice, and the works.
  • A lot of nicer hotels might have an onsite restaurant that does not include a free breakfast. Make sure to calculate this into your potential savings. A $30 night stay that does not include a potential $20-$30 breakfast is not a good deal when compared to a $35-$40 hotel stay that includes a free meal
