Flying to Disney World

(Short Excerpts From the Book)

Flying Could be a Cost Savings by Saving Time

Take into account the time savings that can be accomplished by flying opposed to driving. If you only have a week of vacation, you might not want to spend 2-4 days driving. A two to three hour flight might be a better option. It is important to figure in the value of your time.

If flying is an option that you have to take, but do not have the financial means to make it possible, you may need to wait a little longer. Push back your trip 6 months or so in order to be able to budget for the extra expense. Plan your trip and save as you normally would, but just give yourself some extra time.

Use all of the Free Websites that are Now Available

There are numerous websites and online services available that can help you find the best rate on your flight. Look around and see who has the best offer. These sites are free and can help you find out what the expected cost of a ticket is going to be. Most airline ticket sites just have a quoted price, but Priceline allows you to name your own price. Be warned that by naming your own price, you will not be able to choose your airline or the times that the flights will be. Hotwire is a good site, but it also will not allow you to choose the times or carriers.

Talk to Several Travel Agents and Get on Their Distribution or Call List for Special Deals

Many travel agents keep a list of clients that are flexible with travel or who are looking for special deals. They will call or email if something special comes up that you are looking for. Other travel agents will keep a fax or email list and they will email out lists of special deals and offers on a weekly basis.

Remember, travel agents do not require an exclusive contract in order to do business with them. Sign up with as many agents as you can. They work for you and not the other way around.

Try to Fly Mid-week or on Saturday

Be flexible with travel dates. Many times it is cheaper to fly mid-week rather than on Fridays. Try different days and times. Experts say that Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays are some of the cheaper days to fly.

When looking at flights, also try to look at different times of the year. Slow travel times can have built-in discounts or can trigger discounts. Play around with the free websites that allow you to check on the latest flights.

Look for Programs and Other Ways to Build Personal Frequent Flyer Miles

  • Use credit cards that offer miles for purchases. Many people use these credit cards to pay for all expenditures (i.e. groceries, gas, utility bills, tuition, etc.). By doing this you can get many free miles by simply using a credit card instead of cash. Remember to pay off the balance each month so that you don’t take on the finance charges.
  • Look for other programs that offer free miles. Many airlines offer miles for booking online or for renting a car. Look around on their sites and other travel tip sites for the most up-to-date information.
  • Look on eBay for miles or vouchers that are for sale. As always, be cautious when buying vouchers or anything that does not have a verifiable value. Make sure that the seller has a high rating and that the vouchers can be transferred and have not expired.
